Choosing a College - How to Start

For a student passing out from a school has an option to choose from among the wide range of 3,000 colleges and universities. The students possess sufficient time and energy to analyze through the available range and to choose few institutes which would satisfy their requirement based on their dream and educational background. In the mean time, they apply in various institutes and side-by-side tap on the sources available to finance their education. For student and parents with reasonable expectations backed with proper planning and those who have understood the reality as to there are no ‘right’ colleges, there would not be any unnecessary excitement or anguish, while applying for a college.

Except for the 5%, the remaining 95% of the colleges / universities of USA do not deny to admit more than 50% of the applicants. This means that the chance of getting admitted in a college / university would not be a great deal unless you have plans to get selected in the institutes that fall in the 5% category, mentioned above. Else, if the SAT and grades or ACT totals are very high, then applying and getting admissions in that 5% category institutes would not be impossible.

The scope of a college to be choosy is an issue that depends on its perceived excellence and reputation. This means that those premium institutes with excellent track record and recognition enjoy the option to be more selective, which may other institutes do not have the option to enjoy this advantage. There are few other institutions where they do not even enjoy the opulence of receiving applications in huge count beyond their capacity to admit. This leaves them with minimal selective options.

Based on these tips, you shall commence your process of college hunting.

The foremost step would be to isolate at least 5-6 institutes that provide their students with effective academic agendas coupled with excellent co-curricular activities and those who are prospective to provide you with admission.

Commence this process from your School counselor to get guidance on the following issues:

1. Request them to recommend a list of best colleges, where you can apply and be ensured of admission.
2. Converse on the courses in your agenda.
3. Apply for ACT and SAT exams.
4. Acquire proper details on the representative from colleges visiting your school.
5. Obtain relevant information on the impending college fairs in your locality.

Apart from the above details, do remember to browse through websites to acquire more information and knowledge related to Colleges, scholarships and financial aids available.
